“Upper body’s good,” Dave said calmly. “Just a little more oil below for the light.”
Terry shrugged and reached for the bottle. “Sure, I got it.”
Dave stopped him with a light touch. “Better if I do it. My hands are already oily, and I don’t want any on the props.”
Terry held his breath for a moment, then gave a small nod, avoiding Dave’s eyes.
Dave worked quickly, like it was routine, stopping just as the crown peeked through the hood. He stepped back, studying his subject while wiping his hands with a towel.
Terry resisted the urge to look down.
“Perfect,” Dave said, raising the camera. “Bring the ball a little more to the front… and hold it right there.”
Image 1 - Terry Hayes (in old school football helmut)
The athlete was one of the most useful images in physique photography because it tied the male body to something widely admired and culturally safe. Photographers often leaned into ancient Greek ideals of physical beauty and competition—connections reinforced by the Olympic Games and even in their branding. Bob Mizer’s Athletic Model Guild and magazines like Grecian Guild made the reference explicit, framing the modern physique as a continuation of the classical athletic ideal.
Image 2 - I think this is also Terry Hayes, but not confirmed, please help ID. (hiking the balls)

Strength, discipline, camaraderie, and a well-built body were already being celebrated in sports culture—including sports centered solely on male strength and aesthetic ideals, like weightlifting and bodybuilding. Whether they were sporting balls or dumbbells, athletes could be innocently admired and quietly desired, giving photographers and models a wide range of creative possibilities to oil up and shine a light on.
