"It's so hot out here today!" said Nick, the sun-kissed college jock pool boy in nothing but gym shorts and flip-flops.
"Why don't you take a dip and cool off?" said Al, the fit silver daddy homeowner, taking a swig of beer in the shade. "I'll grab you something cold to drink."
"That sounds great, but I didn't bring a suit."
The older man laughed. "That's alright. It's just us here today, and the neighbors can't see into the yard."
Nick looked around, shrugged, and grinned.
"Well, if you say so..."
This set opens with a photograph by Greek artist Michalis Goumas from Summer Renaissance and closes with Patrick Demarchelier's Nude, St. Barthelemy (1994). Neither image comes from the classic mid-century physique era, but together they capture something I love about the swimming pool fantasy: summer heat, privacy, freedom, and just a little mischief.
Swimming pools occupy a special place in the physique photography imagination. Unlike oceans, rivers, and lakes, they're usually private spaces—part playground, part oasis, and part fantasy. They're places for cooling off, showing off, and occasionally getting into a little harmless trouble.
For me, pool photos always bring up the same handful of images: summer afternoons, pool parties, music drifting through the yard, diving boards, sunbathing, the handsome pool boy, and the simple pleasure of escaping the heat.
There's a playful quality to them that feels different from other water-themed photography. As R.E.M. put it in Nightswimming, it's that feeling of "the fear of getting caught" mixed with the freedom that comes from a hot day, cool water, and not a care in the world.
