Windows - Back

This set opens with the stunning Shep Messing gazing out a window and closes with bodybuilding icon Arnold Schwarzenegger.

1. Shep Messing in one of my favorite photos. I love everything about it.

Along the way we visit Bo Branden, Bruno, Bill Eld, Ken Michaels, and several other familiar faces. Like the recent doorway and door frame posts, windows create natural frames around the body. The difference is that windows aren't really about entering or leaving. They're about looking.

2. Bo Branden a living statue of David.

3. Bruno perhaps an earlier shot of this Cuban Colt legend.

If doorways are about crossing a threshold, windows are about what happens when you pause and take in the view. Sometimes the model is looking out at the world. Sometimes we're looking in at him. Either way, there's a separation between observer and observed.

4. Bill Eld in a rare angle of him as he's better known for his front side. The lighting here is wonderful.

5. Vito Milan has it all going for him; the burns, the stache, the hair, and the beautifully proportioned physique. The the geometric moorish-inspired screen is a nice compliment.

Photographers seem to love that tension. Add natural window light and the effect becomes even stronger. Some of these men are reduced to silhouettes while others are sculpted by highlights and shadows.

6. One search said this is a George Platt Lynes shot from the 1940's, but it looks older to me.  The model is gorgeous.  I'd love any info.

7. Nestor Nerkach on a bench.

What I like about this set is how reflective it feels. Nobody appears to be in a hurry. They're standing, waiting, watching, daydreaming.

8.  Joe Williams with incredible calves and tan lines.

9. Ken Michaels the incredible ginger stud in boots.

Of course, the photographers knew exactly what they were doing too. A beautiful backside framed by a window is bound to attract attention. The question is whether the model is admiring the view—or whether we're the ones doing the looking.

10. Arnold Schwartznegger bodybuilder, movie star, Governor, and all-around beefcake.

Please share any thoughts, questions, or corrections in comments.  I'd love help IDing #6.  Admittedly this is one of my favorite bushnstache posts so far.  Not sure why, but these shots have layers of beauty and poetry for me. Hope you enjoy.

  1. Great set today... I checked my GPL file, sadly no info on #6. As a side note... I met Shep Messing in the 70's at a photo shoot. He was a really nice man and a good sport. He was doing something for ABC Sports with Cheryl Tiegs.

  2. I’m definitely an ass man. These butts are beautiful, but my man’s still wins. XG

  4. Number six is definitely not by G.P. Lynes as Boz says above. The style, backdrop, and technical level are indicative of 1900-1914.

    1. That's what I'm thinking too, but can't find confirmation.
