Bars

It doesn't get much simpler than a bar: one line cutting across the frame. But give it to a physique photographer and suddenly it's exercise equipment, a seat, a frame—or a jail cell.

1. Jim Johnson posing on a monkey bar at Santa Monica, CA, Muscle Beach, by Bob Mizer - 1966. (not the highest quality photo, but I couldn't resist the smile).

2. Jim Johnson in a front support and posing strap by Bob Mizer.

3. Jim Johnson was featured in Mizer's short horror sci-fi film, "Dr. Bigelow's Monster," in 1966.

4. Keri Long in a front support on a high bar in red trunks, in the same location, also by Mizer.

5. Larry Ferris aka Leo Hooks who was a Canadian bodybuilder and passed away in December 2024 at the age of 76.

Models push themselves above it, perch on it, or lean against it. The horizontal versions put the body to work, flexing the arms, chest and abs while creating a rather conveniently placed line across the pelvis. Turn those bars vertically and the mood changes completely.

6. Joe Iannini in handcuffs and ball and chain locked to a set of bars in an outdoor jail set on Mizer's compound with a random toilet and mat in the background.

7. Joe Ianninin rear view.

8. Anton aka Tony Jost in a Mizer jail set.

The model isn't hidden so much as divided by them, often pressing right up against the bars or even extending parts of his body through them. Sometimes, though, as in the final shot of Jack Colbert, they're simply lines in space, organizing the body and the composition.

9. Wayne Pickett in a Mizer (AMG) jail set from Physique Pictorial magazine.

10. Joe Hardee (see Full Sets post from Aug 15) in a jail holding cell set by Mizer in 1983.

11. Jack Colbert posed in front of horizontal bars by Pat Milo.
