Bob Mucci—also photographed under the name Brad Payne—is one of those models who doesn't quite feel like a model to me. He seems to have circulated among several important physique photographers of the period, posing for Dave Martin, Bruce of Los Angeles, Russ Warner, and Denny Denfield. Martin was photographing him as Brad Payne by 1953, while Bruce put that unforgettable smiling portrait on the cover of the Winter 1955 Grecian Guild Studio Quarterly. Which of his two names was actually his own remains a little unclear.
There's something wonderfully everyday about Mucci. I can imagine him as the plumber leaning over my bathtub with just a little crack showing, the butcher behind the counter who always flashes you that genuine smile, or, like another favorite Dave Martin model, Norm Tousley, the neighborhood fireman fighting flames to protect his community. He looks like somebody you might actually know.
And yet—good lord. He's simultaneously sweet-looking and a fiercely hot stud muffin. Masculine, strong, muscular, handsome, hairy where it matters and very well endowed. But what really gets me is that he also looks huggable. There's a warmth to him that survives the posing and the extraordinary body. He's built like a powerhouse but somehow gives off big teddy-bear energy.
Maybe that's why Mucci feels so familiar to me. So many physique photographs construct a fantasy around the model—the sailor, cowboy, athlete, prisoner or Greek god. Mucci doesn't really need one. He is the fantasy: the possibility that the ordinary man you encounter in everyday life might look like this when his clothes come off.
A big teddy bear who happens to look spectacular naked. Sometimes the fantasy doesn't need to be any more complicated than that.

DeleteMr. Mucci is a fine model who deserves all the praise, but there is no way that magazine could have been published in 1955 with a cover like that. I've seen several of these "fantasy" covers over the years, and someone put a lot of effort into making them look authentic. In one case someone did a replica later (early 70s, I think) that did feature photos made around the time indicated, so this might be an example of that.
ReplyDeleteSheesh! And the internet Tom foolery continues. Thanks for the note. bns
DeleteMuch better researched postings on the models and their history and the history of photographers. Keep up the good work!
ReplyDeleteThank you. bns
DeleteBob Mucci participated in the 1950 Mr America contest, he did not place as he was up against the likes of Armand Tanny, Vince Gironda and George Eiferman.

Super interesting. I don’t see him as a bodybuilder personally, though he has a muscular frame. He seems much more huggable.💕bns
