Not much to accessorize when you're wearing nothing at all, but sometimes the smallest details catch your eye. A little bling, a woven bracelet, a leather wristband, or a ring that might mean he's married—or maybe a college boy showing off his class ring. Unlike the usual studio props, I like to imagine some of these belonged to the models themselves. Little clues about the men behind the poses. Or maybe they just liked a bit of jewelry. Either way, it's fun to wonder.
1. Rich Villart wearing a bracelet. Attribution unverified. Please help if able.
2. Matt Cappadocia with small bracelet by Steve Paige in 1985.
3. Gerard Landry or "Jerry" wearing a metal bracelet. My source attributes this to a European magazine, perhaps IPS, around 1968 but I cannot verify. If you have more info, please share.
4. Ray Lewis wearing a bracelet with foot propped up on a retro chair.
5. Philippe Cocteau by Brad Posey c. 1983 on a black armchair wearing a woven (friendship) bracelet.
6. Roy Garrett (birth name Garrett Samber (1948-2005) by Jim French c. 1979, wearing a leather cuff or wristband. Apparently aside from modeling Garrett worked as a supervisor at a cosmetics factory and as a bartender.
7. Bill Cable aka Stoner (birth name William Laurence Cumpanas) by Jim French c 1982, wearing a curb-link chain ID bracelet. William has a fascinating and tragic story, apparently he had a Hollywood crossover playing a police officer in Pee-wee’s Big Adventure (1985) and an officer in Elvira: Mistress of the Dark (1988). He also dated Cassandra Peterson aka Elvira, who financially supported him after he was paralyzed in a motorcycle accident in Laurel Canyon in 1996.
8. Noel Kemp (born Michael Skrzypcak (1954 –1988). by Falcon in a dark bracelet. Born in Erie, Pennsylvania, Skrzypcak was a highly accomplished individual outside of modeling. He possessed a sharp mind for design and studied architecture at Woodbury University in Southern California.
9. Ray Piel by Bob Mizer wearing a wedding band.
10. Kip Noll (birth name Thomas Earl Hagen (1957–2001) wearing a ring on each hand. In terms of identity loops, his career is famous for a completely manufactured family dynasty. He was originally brought into the industry in 1975 by Larry Ginsburg and marketed as the younger brother of established model Bob Noll. When Kip became a massive breakout superstar, studios capitalized on his fame by casting totally unrelated models and branding them as his relatives—introducing Jeff and Scott Noll as his younger brothers, Marc Noll as his cousin, and Chip Noll as his nephew. None of them were legally related.
