Watches

Everything comes off except the watch. Was it an oversight, a fashion statement, or did nobody think to ask? Unlike a sailor cap or leather harness, a wristwatch hardly seems like an essential prop in physique photography. But when it's one of the only things a man is wearing, you can't help noticing it. Maybe it tells us something about his taste, his status, or simply what was fashionable at the time. Or maybe he just wanted to know when the shoot would be over. 

1. John Converse aka Dak wearing a watch, a ring, and a white t-shirt by Walter Kundzicz.

2. Monte Hanson drinking a beer and wearing a watch. Text on image reads, "A man's pleasure." The Bob Mizer Foundation identifies Monte as an important figure in the transition toward frontal nudity in physique photography.

7. Chris Williams, aka Todd Dunning Bart (1967–1991), before bleaching his hair, poses wearing little more than a wristwatch in a hallway. Williams appeared in adult films for Catalina and Falcon before becoming embroiled in a 1989 Washington, D.C., police sting targeting an escort service. Still under 21, he reportedly received immunity in exchange for grand jury testimony identifying others involved, effectively ending his adult film career. The scandal also helped spur the creation of the Gay and Lesbian Liaison Unit (GLLU) to address police harassment of the LGBTQ+ community. Sadly, he died at the age of 23 due to AIDS-related complications.

8. Hal Rodman aka Javier Rivera in a living room wearing only a watch. Apparently he used the two monikers to expand his market to Latin audiences. He is also considered an important figure in the transition from the closeted athlete/bodybuilder trope of the 1950s to seducing gay audiences intentionally in the 1980s. 

9. Kol Nelson aka Nielsen wearing a necklace and a wrist watch out in nature. Kol also did video work for Catalina and Falcon in the 1980s.

10. Dean Spencer in a sailor uniform and watch. Spencer was born in Ireland in 1968 and became an adult film actor in the 1990s.
