Putting two men together in a shot—naked, not fighting—was a gamble. The “ritual of innocence” can only stretch so far before things read as intimate.
1. Unknown Models (sword play)
Sometimes it feels playful, almost like they’re in on a joke. Other times, you can sense they know exactly what’s happening, even if they don’t quite show it.
2. Mike Pohl and Unknown Model (snuggy)
3. Jeff Mason and Quave Dalton (pillow fight)
4. Steve Boyd and Unknown Models (room service)(technically a trio)
There’s also that slightly staged feeling. Hands placed a little too carefully, bodies caught between connecting with each other and playing to the camera. It’s like they’re figuring it out in real time—half in the moment, half performing it.
5. Chick Howard and George (ups and downs)
6. Ronnie Ronson and Unknown Model (front and back)
7. Gary Boyd and Unknown Model (hands on)
What stays with me is the risk for the models—not just exposed in the shallow end, but diving headfirst into homoeroticism, whether they were gay or not. The photographers took that risk too, but they weren’t the ones being seen. I get that—the pull and the fear of exposure—which is why these images feel like more than fantasy to me. They’re a kind of mirror…they expose me too.
8. Hog Chopper and Jim Cassidy aka Rick Cassidy (closer look)
9. Toby and Bruno (reflection)
10. Stan Bear and Unknown Model (squeeze)
