Fireplaces

This set begins with an unknown model crouched beside a fireplace mantel and ends with the always welcome Ray Harley, whose mustache and body hair could probably improve any room in the house.

1. Unknown model in squatted pose with a fireplace.

Along the way we visit Bo Branden, Pat Fulton, George Payne, and several other familiar faces making use of one of the most common features in mid-century domestic photography.

2. Bo Branden (see June 13, Windows-Back) facing the camera.

3. Don Peterson with wood and flame.

Fireplaces occupy an interesting place in the modern home. For centuries they provided heat, light, and a place to cook. By the time many of these photographs were taken, they had largely become decorative—symbols of comfort, romance, and an earlier way of life.

4. Gary Frost flexing in posing strap.

5. Pat Fulton kneeling in color.

They also happen to make excellent photographic props. A mantel creates a frame, a hearth creates a bench, and the brickwork adds texture without distracting from the model.

6. Ted Prior blonde Colt model in contrapposto from behind.

7. George Payne, Bijou film, Centurians of Rome (1981), lead in wide stance.

What I like about fireplace shots is that they can feel both cozy and a little sexy. Maybe it's the association with winter cabins, ski lodges, and nights spent indoors. Or maybe it's just the sight of a handsome naked man stretched out in front of one.

8. Bud Ralph stoking the fire on tartan blanket.

9. Paul Brandt flexing his abs and hanging low in front of the fire.

Either way, the fireplace remains one of the few household fixtures capable of warming up a room even when there's no fire burning.

10. Ray Harley, hirsuted and handsomely mustached late '90s Catalina star dropping trou on the hearth.
