This set begins with George Conover spread against a wall and ends with Rocky Lanz making use of one of Bob Mizer's famous backyard walls, which also highlights Brad Dillon, Bob Pistol, and Joe Cataldi.

Walls show up everywhere in physique photography. Unlike a plain studio backdrop, they bring a little history and personality into the frame.

Backyard walls, industrial walls, brick walls, concrete walls—they tell us something about where the model is, even if it's mostly implied.

They also give photographers another tool to play with. Models can lean against them, stretch across them, perch on top of them, or use them to create interesting lines and shapes.

What I enjoy most about these exterior wall shots is their sense of play. Joe Cataldi launches into a split jump, Rocky climbs around like a kid in a backyard, and even the more serious poses feel relaxed and physical. The walls may be solid and unmoving, but the men may not be.
