Don Hawskley

Don Hawksley is another familiar face who seemed to be in demand everywhere. He posed for Bruce Bellas, Bob Mizer, Pat Milo, and others, working fully clothed, partially dressed, and completely nude.

1. On a stool with white background.

His photographs range from polished studio studies to outdoor scenes, domestic interiors, solo portraits, and group compositions. Wherever a photographer pointed a camera, Don seemed equally at home.

2. On an AMG set profile backview.

3. Seated on a patio.

He had an easy, all-American look that photographers clearly loved. Greased-back hair, sparkling eyes, a warm smile, and the kind of lean, athletic build that suggested an active life more than hours in the gym. He looked like the handsome guy next door, only one who happened to photograph exceptionally well.

4. Smiling among the trees.

5. Low pose showing fuzzy backside on same AMG set.

His backside was terrific, but let's be honest—that wasn't what made him famous. Don became especially well known for his erect photographs, something that was still relatively uncommon in the 1950s and '60s.

6. Standing forward facing against wooden wall.

7. Same wooden wall facing profile with pronounced shadow.

And when he did reveal himself...he gave collectors plenty to admire. Nature had been generous, and the camera certainly wasn't shy about documenting the full length.

8. Reclinging on a mid-century sofa.

9. Resting on elbow partially facing down on another mid-century sofa.

What I enjoy most, though, is how comfortable he appears in front of the lens. Whether standing in a studio, relaxing around the house, or posing outdoors, there's very little strain in his performances. He never looks like he's trying too hard.

10. Studio shot profile facing with a column and one hand in a fist.

11. Facing away with hands behind his head against wooden wall with strong shadow.

That ease, combined with his prolific output and obvious popularity with photographers, is probably why I keep returning to his work. I'd love to hear if anyone knows more about Don Hawksley or has additional photographs or stories to share.

12. Forward facing leaning against stool with white background.
