Don Hawksley is another familiar face who seemed to be in demand everywhere. He posed for Bruce Bellas, Bob Mizer, Pat Milo, and others, working fully clothed, partially dressed, and completely nude.
His photographs range from polished studio studies to outdoor scenes, domestic interiors, solo portraits, and group compositions. Wherever a photographer pointed a camera, Don seemed equally at home.
He had an easy, all-American look that photographers clearly loved. Greased-back hair, sparkling eyes, a warm smile, and the kind of lean, athletic build that suggested an active life more than hours in the gym. He looked like the handsome guy next door, only one who happened to photograph exceptionally well.
His backside was terrific, but let's be honest—that wasn't what made him famous. Don became especially well known for his erect photographs, something that was still relatively uncommon in the 1950s and '60s.
And when he did reveal himself...he gave collectors plenty to admire. Nature had been generous, and the camera certainly wasn't shy about documenting the full length.
What I enjoy most, though, is how comfortable he appears in front of the lens. Whether standing in a studio, relaxing around the house, or posing outdoors, there's very little strain in his performances. He never looks like he's trying too hard.
